Stocking Your Preventative Health Toolbox: Becoming the CEO of Your Health the PHAM Way
At PHAM — Preventative Health Awareness Movement (P-H-A-M) — we are on a mission.
A mission to shift healthcare from reactive to proactive.
From passive to empowered.
From “pill for an ill” to preventative, layered, patient-driven strategy.
For too long, we’ve bought into a system that waits until something breaks before acting. We’ve been conditioned to visit a practitioner and ask them to “fix” us — instead of recognizing that we are the most important member of our healthcare team.
But Canadians are waking up.
Since the pandemic, I’ve seen a shift. People want ownership. They want options. They want evidence-informed tools. They want to improve their healthspan — not just lifespan.
The challenge?
They don’t know where to start.
That’s where PHAM comes in.
PHAM is about:
- Educating
- Empowering
- Putting people into action
Because empowerment without implementation changes nothing.
Over my 34-year clinical career, I’ve curated tools that are:
- Practical
- Implementable
- Science-informed
- Adaptable across life stages
- Easy to integrate into daily living
These are tools I personally use, recommend to patients, and believe belong in your preventative health toolbox.

2. Dolphin Neurostim
Nervous System Regulation & Vagus Nerve Activation
One of the most transformative tools in my PHAM toolbox is the Dolphin Neurostim.
It is a Health Canada–approved Class II medical device, often covered under extended health insurance plans, which makes it more accessible to everyday Canadians.
As a clinician highly trained in its use, I’ve seen firsthand how powerful it can be. What excites me most? I can put it into the hands of individuals so they can regulate their nervous systems themselves.
The Dolphin uses direct micro-current (not TENS) that mimics the body’s electrical communication pathways.
It can:
- Calm the autonomic nervous system
- Down-regulate the autonomic nervous system and vagus nerve (a game changer)
- Reduce inflammation
- Lower cortisol stress hormones
- Improve sleep
- Support concussion recovery
- Treat scars and post-surgical adhesions
- Help headaches, menstrual pain, arthritis and more
Vagus nerve stimulation shifts the body from fight-or-flight into rest-and-digest.
When the vagus nerve is functioning optimally, we see improvements in:
- Emotional regulation
- Immune function
- Inflammatory balance
- Digestive efficiency
- Stress resilience
This is preventative nervous system care.
If you are interested in purchasing a dolphin and would like an estimate to submit for possible reimbursement by your extended health insurance, I am happy to help. Please reach out to me at mailto:[email protected]

3. X39® Patch
Supporting Regeneration at the Cellular Level
If we want to improve health-span, we must think at the cellular level.
One of the most studied regenerative peptides in the body is GHK-Cu (glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine bound to copper), a naturally occurring tri-copper peptide often described as a biological “caretaker.”
GHK-Cu declines with age.
Yet it plays a critical role in:
- Stem cell activation
- Tissue remodeling
- Wound healing
- Collagen production
- Anti-inflammatory signalling
How GHK-Cu Supports Cellular Health
Research suggests GHK-Cu:
• Activates epidermal stem cells
• Supports mesenchymal stem cell repair
• Enhances wound healing and tissue remodeling
• Helps stimulate hair follicle regeneration
• Reduces reactive oxygen species (ROS)
• Suppresses inflammatory mediators like NF-κB and TNF-α
• Increases collagen, elastin and glycosaminoglycans
It can even influence gene expression, shifting cells from an aged or diseased pattern toward a healthier profile.
The X39 patch is designed to stimulate the body’s own production of this peptide using phototherapy signalling.
It does not deliver drugs or hormones.
It supports communication pathways.
This is what PHAM believes in, supporting the body’s innate repair capacity.
Is it a magic bullet? No.
Is it a powerful adjunct when layered with sleep, strength training, nutrition, and stress regulation? Absolutely.

7. Breath
A powerful, accessible & FREE Tool
Your Most Accessible Tool: Breath — The Life Force Within
If we’re truly stocking our Preventative Health Toolbox, we cannot overlook the one tool every single one of us already owns.
Your breath.
Not a supplement.
Not a device.
Not a scan.
Not something you have to order.
Your breath is your life force — and it is available to you 24/7.
In Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art by James Nestor, Nestor takes us on a fascinating journey through ancient practices and modern research to show that how we breathe directly impacts how we live. What struck me most is this: we’ve modernized everything in healthcare, yet many of us have forgotten the most fundamental regulatory tool built into our biology.
Breathing is not just automatic.
It is programmable.
And when we change the way we breathe, we change the way our nervous system responds to the world.
🧠 Breath & The Nervous System: From Reactive to Regulated
As many of you know, so much of what I teach — whether in clinic, through PHAM, or in the CEO of Your Health framework — comes back to nervous system regulation.
Slow, intentional breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system — the “rest, digest, and repair” branch. This is not wellness fluff. This is physiology.
Research shows that controlled breathing can:
- Decrease anxiety and perceived stress
- Lower cortisol levels
- Improve heart rate variability (a marker of resilience)
- Reduce blood pressure
- Improve emotional regulation
When we lengthen the exhale, breathe through the nose, and slow the respiratory rate, we send a signal of safety to the brain. And when the brain feels safe, the body can heal.
Breath changes the lens through which we see the world.
Calm physiology = clearer thinking = better decisions.
That is preventative health.
❤️ Breath & Blood Pressure
Slow breathing practices (around 5–6 breaths per minute) have been shown to help reduce systolic and diastolic blood pressure by improving baroreflex sensitivity and autonomic balance.
Translation?
Your breath can support your cardiovascular system without a prescription.
That doesn’t mean breath replaces medical care — it means it becomes part of your integrative strategy.
This is exactly what stocking your toolbox looks like
🛡️ Breath & Immunity
Emerging research also suggests that intentional breathing may:
- Reduce inflammatory markers
- Improve oxygen utilization
- Support lymphatic movement
- Enhance vagal tone (which influences immune function)
When your nervous system is chronically in fight-or-flight, immunity suffers. When we regulate through breath, we create an internal environment more conducive to repair and resilience.
🧬 Breath & The Brain
Breathing patterns influence activity in the limbic system — the emotional center of the brain. Studies show that nasal breathing in particular is linked to improved cognitive performance, memory consolidation, and emotional processing.
This is why breathwork can shift not just how you feel — but how you perceive.
And perception drives behaviour.
Behaviour drives health outcomes.
A PHAM Perspective: The Power Is Already Within You
What I love about breathwork is that it aligns perfectly with the PHAM philosophy.
Preventative health is not about outsourcing your power.
It’s about recognizing it.
Your breath is:
- Free
- Immediate
- Accessible
- Evidence-informed
- Regulating
- Empowering
It is the one tool you never forget at home.
You don’t need an appointment.
You don’t need equipment.
You need awareness.
Practical Application: Start Here
If you want to begin integrating breath into your Preventative Health Toolbox, try this simple protocol:
The 4-6 Reset
- Inhale through your nose for 4 seconds
- Exhale slowly through your nose for 6 seconds
- Repeat for 3–5 minutes
- Focus on relaxing your jaw, tongue, and shoulders
Longer exhales = greater parasympathetic activation.
Practice it before:
- A difficult conversation
- Sleep
- A stressful meeting
- Getting in the car
- Checking your email
This is how we move from reactive to responsive.
Resources to Explore
I encourage you to watch the breathing videos and book by James Nestor to deepen your understanding of the science behind breath. His work bridges ancient wisdom and modern physiology in a way that is accessible and compelling.
This is not about hype.
It’s about remembering what we’ve forgotten.
The PHAM Philosophy
PHAM is about changing the legacy of healthcare.
It’s about recognizing:
You are not passive.
You are not broken.
You are not waiting.
You are the CEO.
And CEOs:
- Invest in long-term strategy
- Layer tools intelligently
- Build strong integrative teams
- Adapt across life stages
- Take responsibility
At 30 your toolbox looks one way.
