Why I Stopped Letting Insurance Dictate My Healing
If your body is hurting in June…
does it really make sense to wait until January for your insurance benefits to reset before getting help?
It’s a question I’ve been asking myself more and more lately — both as a physiotherapist and as someone who has personally had to rethink what healing actually looks like.
I've had clients ask me:
"How many times a week do I need to come in?"
And I’ve also heard:
“I’ve just always gotten an adjustment once a month.”
Or…
“I don’t know, I go to get my hips and spine aligned and in check.”
And I understand the comfort in that.
Sometimes there’s even a fear that if you don’t get the adjustment, dry needling, electrical stimulation, or treatment… the pain will come back stronger. Or you'll "fall out of alignment".
But have you ever paused to ask yourself the opposite?

✨ What is actually changing in my body here?
✨ What am I learning about my body?
✨ What can I do to keep my hips strong, supported, and my pain at bay between appointments?
Because the body is an incredible healer when we learn to listen to it, move it intentionally, and support it consistently.
Our tissues, joints, muscles, and bones thrive on movement, circulation, strength, mobility, breath, and nervous system regulation — not just passive treatment.
In fact, relying on prolonged passive treatment hinders healing.
There’s a common rhythm many people fall into with insurance covered care like physiotherapy, chiropractic, massage, etc.
A few sessions a week.
Then once a week.
Then every other week.
Then “maintenance.”
And often, whether consciously or unconsciously, the treatment plan becomes tied to insurance coverage instead of true healing.
Maybe you have $500/year in benefits.
So the visits continue until the coverage runs out by June… and then what?
Do you spend the rest of the year living in pain, feeling stiff, disconnected, or unsure what to do next for your body?
I say this with compassion because I used to think this way too.
And I’m a physiotherapist.
I used to wait for insurance coverage to determine when I could access care. Until one day I realized:
What am I actually waiting for?
This is my body.
My health.
My energy.
My life.
I don’t want to spend months waiting around for another calendar year to begin while feeling stuck in a body that doesn’t feel good.
I want to heal.
I want to move.
I want to run, ski, lift, play, travel, and fully participate in my life now.
Ironically, paying out of pocket for my own healing was one of the most empowering things I ever did because it shifted my mindset completely.
Instead of asking:
“What will insurance cover?”
I started asking:
“What will actually help me heal?”
That’s a very different question.
And this isn’t about blame or shame.
Not everyone has unlimited resources, and I deeply understand that healthcare costs can feel overwhelming.
But I do think many of us have been conditioned to see investing in our health differently than we see other forms of self-care or lifestyle spending.
We normalize:
✨ expensive coffees
✨ cosmetic treatments
✨ home upgrades
✨ impulse purchases
…but hesitate when it comes to investing in the body we live in every single day.

Again — this isn’t judgment.
It’s an invitation to reflect on priorities.
Because the truth is:
waiting around for insurance to “allow” us to heal isn’t always serving us.
And passive care alone doesn’t create transformation either.
True healing happens when we become active participants in our recovery.
When we really take inventory of how we are progressing.
Is the needle actually moving?
Or are we simply showing up for another appointment, lying down on the table, temporarily feeling relief… only to feel exactly the same the next day or week after?
Has anything truly changed?
When we experience therapy that empowers us — when we learn how to move, breathe, strengthen, regulate, recover, and understand our bodies — that’s when healing deepens.
That’s when we begin supporting our bodies consistently instead of relying on temporary relief.
We all have more power than we think.
We can choose ourselves.
We can choose healing.
We can choose to stop waiting.
And honestly?
Life is too short to spend it stuck in pain waiting for January.
Namaste,
Tatianna
