We have a Bone to pick with you.

We have a Bone to pick with you.
Bone health isn't sexy. I know. It's a hard sell as bone health is often silent and we don't tend to worry about it until something goes wrong and we literally "break" ie. sustain a fracture.

It is time to change the conversation we are having around bone health from one that is reactive to one that is more proactive. We need to look at and approach our bone health from a generational lens.

Osteoporosis prevention and management should be considered throughout the ages and stages of life. It is not just an "old" person's disease.

During my video I discuss the importance of bone health and the need for early detection and prevention. I highlight the many factors that can affect bone health, such as underlying conditions, medications, nutrition, lifestyle issues, like excessive alcohol consumption, smoking and stress.

Recognizing the limitations of the current OHIP covered DEXA bone scan is important as there is now a new innovative, radiation free Health Canada approved technology called the REMS Bone Scan that is available to Canadians.

This REMS Bone Scan does NOT require a doctor referral, has less errors due to positioning of a patient and calibration of equipment, is accessible to anyone 21+ years of age and most importantly provides both your Bone Mineral Density (BMD-TScore) as well as your bone quality/strength and Fragility Risk Fracture Score.

I am excited and honoured to be partnering with Megan Buhrmester of Osteosound to bring the REMS Bone Scan to communities, clinics, homes and businesses across Canada. Together, Megan and I are on a mission to be your partners in both bone health analysis and preventative health education.

I also emphasize in this video the significance of bone quality in determining your risk of osteoporotic fracture in the next 5 years. This new technology allows us to take a more proactive approach and provide baseline testing at an earlier age thus empowering individuals to take control of their bone health.

I made reference to the latest research published in the National Library of Medicine lead by Paola Pisani which suggests that Fragility Score is a reliable predictor of 5-year fracture probability in a representative population including both female and male subjects. The reported results showed that Fragility Score enables effective identification of patients at risk for a generic major osteoporotic fracture (occurring at the spine, hip, radius, humerus or forearm) upon lumbar investigations.

My conversation concludes with a reminder of the importance of muscle health and preventing sarcopenia. Sarcopenia has been defined as an age related, involuntary loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength. Beginning as early as the 4th decade of life, evidence suggests that skeletal muscle mass and skeletal muscle strength decline in a linear fashion, with up to 50% of mass being lost by the 8th decade of life.

When we know better, we can do better! This is why I am super excited about the Osteosound REMS Bone scan. As a passionate RMT with a background in Kinesiology for over 3 decades, I know first hand the important role that healthy muscle plays in our bone and overall health. As the saying goes..."motion is lotion or move it or lose it."

So, it is time to prioritize bone health. Book your REM Bone Scan today or call 647-577-4757 or 905-906-7836 | 905-90-OSTEO

Takeaways

  • Bone and muscle health are the foundation of overall health.
  • Factors such as underlying conditions, medications, nutrition, and stress can impact bone health.

Upwards of 80% of North Americans suffer from some degree of cortisol imbalance, otherwise known as adrenal fatigue.

Our adrenal glands are pyramid-shaped glands that sit on top of each kidney, and are responsible for producing multiple hormones. Included in this list of important hormones are progesterone, testosterone, estrogen and cortisol. The role of cortisol is to help us manage all types of stress – emotional, physical (inflammation) and
