Until You Make the Unconscious Conscious: The Patterns Running Your Life
“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.”
— commonly attributed to Carl Jung
What if some of the things you believe are simply who you are aren't actually who you are at all?
What if they're patterns?
The overthinking. The people-pleasing. The need to control. The pressure to prove yourself. The difficulty saying no. The relationships you keep repeating. The success you chase but never quite feel.
We tend to look at these as separate problems.
At Enable No More, I see the pattern underneath them.
Because so much of what shapes our lives happens outside our conscious awareness.
You Can't Change What You Can't See
Long before we're old enough to consciously question what we believe, we're learning.
We're watching. Feeling. Adapting.
We begin forming beliefs about ourselves and the world around us.
What do I need to do to belong?
Is it safe to speak up?
Do I have to achieve to be valued?
Can I trust people?
Is money safe?
Am I enough as I am?
Research into unconscious and automatic processing supports what many of us experience firsthand: important emotional, motivational and behavioural processes can happen without conscious intention or awareness. Our conscious mind matters enormously, but it isn't the only thing influencing how we respond to the world.
This helps explain why simply knowing better doesn't always mean we can do differently.
You can know you need a boundary and still feel terrified to set one.
You can know you deserve rest and feel guilty when you stop.
You can consciously desire success while another part of you has learned that visibility, receiving or being seen isn't safe.
There may be more influencing our choices than the part we can currently see.
And that's where awareness becomes powerful.
Once we can see it, we can begin working with it.
The Projection Room
I often think about our experience of life like watching a movie.
We're staring at the screen trying desperately to change what's happening on it.
The relationship. The money. The behaviour. The body. The circumstances. The other person.
But rarely do we turn around and look inside the projection room.
Because behind us is the film through which we're interpreting what we see:
Our beliefs. Conditioning. Experiences. Expectations. Survival strategies. Our ideas about love, safety, money, success, belonging and worth.
Our internal programming doesn't create everything that happens to us. Life happens, circumstances matter and other people make choices outside our control.
But our conditioning can influence how we interpret what happens, how we respond, what we tolerate and what we repeatedly choose.
Beliefs influence perception.
Perception influences behaviour.
Behaviour influences choices.
Choices influence outcomes.
And repeated outcomes can eventually begin to look like identity.
“This is just who I am.”
But maybe it isn't.
Maybe it's who you learned to be.
Awareness Isn't About Blame
This is where compassion belongs in the conversation.
How can we condemn ourselves for something we haven't yet learned to see?
Maybe you learned:
Keep everyone happy.
Be useful and you'll be loved.
Stay small.
Don't trust people.
Work hard to be worthy.
Never let them see you struggle.
When beliefs are repeated long enough, we stop experiencing them as beliefs.
We experience them as reality.
So awareness isn't about blaming ourselves, our parents or our past.
It's about finally being able to ask:
Is this actually true?
Where did I learn this?
What has this pattern been protecting me from?
Does it still belong in the life I'm creating?
Awareness gives us agency.
Some Patterns Didn't Begin With Us
Our conditioning doesn't develop in isolation.
We inherit family stories, beliefs about money and love, ways of handling emotions and strategies for surviving hardship.
Sometimes they're spoken.
Often they're simply modelled.
Even the field of epigenetics is expanding our understanding of how environment and experience can influence biology, while research continues to explore the complex ways adversity and other influences may affect generations.
But we don't need science to recognize that families carry patterns.
The silence.
The scarcity.
The overworking.
The addiction.
The emotional disconnection.
The need to control.
The belief that we have to carry everything ourselves.
We don't need to blame the generations before us. They had programming too.
But once we become conscious of what we're carrying, we get to ask:
Does this pattern continue through me?
We Are Not Prisoners of Our Programming
Here's the hopeful part.
Patterns can be interrupted.
Our brains retain the capacity to change and adapt through experience — something neuroscience calls neuroplasticity.
But change isn't simply about thinking positively.
If a pattern has been reinforced for decades, telling yourself to stop doing it doesn't necessarily change what your system has learned.
This is why I believe we regulate before we rewire.
We see the pattern.
We understand what it has been protecting.
We create safety.
We question the belief.
We practice another response.
And over time, what once happened automatically becomes something we can consciously choose.
Our history has shaped us.
It doesn't have to dictate who we become.
Remember Who You Were Before the Pattern
A pattern repeated long enough can begin to feel like identity.
I'm a people pleaser.
I'm bad with money.
I'm too much.
I'm not enough.
I'm the strong one.
But what if that's conditioning mistaken for identity?
What if healing isn't about becoming someone new?
What if it's about remembering who you were before you learned who you had to become to feel safe, loved, accepted or worthy?
Before you learned to perform to be worthy.
Please to belong.
Control to feel safe.
Achieve to matter.
Rescue to be loved.
Stay small to remain accepted.
At Enable No More, I think of this as returning to our original operating system.
Not erasing our history.
Not pretending painful things didn't happen.
Not blaming our parents, our ancestors or ourselves.
But recognizing:
This pattern may have protected me once. It doesn't have to lead me forever.
This is where we begin moving from unconscious reaction to conscious self-leadership.
When the Pattern Becomes Conscious
This brings us back to Jung:
“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.”
When we can't see the pattern, it can feel like fate.
Why do I keep ending up here?
Why can't I get ahead?
Why do I sabotage myself when things start going well?
Why can't I say no?
Why am I never satisfied no matter how much I achieve?
But then we see it.
The pattern.
And suddenly, what once felt inevitable becomes something we can question.
Awareness creates a pause between the programming and our response.
And inside that pause lives something incredibly powerful:
Choice.
This is the work of Enable No More.
Remember.
Regulate.
Rewire.
Rise.
Ripple.
Remember who you are beneath the programming.
Regulate the system that learned it needed the pattern.
Rewire what no longer serves you.
Rise into conscious self-leadership.
And ripple something different into the generations that follow.
Because perhaps the greatest freedom isn't creating an entirely different life.
Perhaps it's becoming conscious enough to stop unconsciously recreating the old one.
Disrupt the pattern. Take back your power. Lead your life.
Ready to uncover the pattern beneath the problem?
If you recognize yourself in these words but don't yet know what's driving the cycle, you don't have to wait until your life falls apart to become curious about it.
The patterns operating outside our awareness can be difficult to identify from inside the very system that created them.
A Take Back Your Power Consultation is an opportunity to begin looking beneath the behaviour, symptoms or circumstances and explore the subconscious patterns that may be keeping you stuck.
Because awareness is the beginning of the work.
It's where your power to choose differently begins.
