Lymphatic Drainage Myths : BUSTED

- Manual lymphatic drainage therapies are safe for everyone
In general, yes.
More specifically, if you have a blood clot, heart disease or an active infection, a consultation with a certified and licensed lymphatic drainage therapist is necessary prior to any treatment. Your therapist may require consulting with your physician prior to commencing any treatment or plan.
- Lymphatic drainage means a tube is inserted in the body to drain fluid
At the outpatient level and largely in North America, no.
Lymphatic drainage is comprised of external techniques that may have indications for use of “tools” that promote drainage. All applications are external. Examples of “tools” may be red light therapy; vibration massagers; suction cups; gua sha tools
- I heard lymphatic drainage is painful
It shouldn’t be. Sometimes lymphatic drainage therapies can cause a feeling of tenderness but that is dependent on the severity of your symptoms, disease and inflammation. Techniques are soft and light to the touch. Lymphatic drainage is nurturing. Deeper work may be done on the abdomen. That said, it is all to be applied always considering the patient’s tolerance and response to techniques are modified appropriately.
- Lymphatic drainage will make me lose weight
Not exactly and largely, the answer is a straight no. Lymphatic drainage causes you to have a reduction in fluid retention and a decrease in inflammation which can reduce bloating and make you feel as though you have lost weight. It is fluid that is being lost rather than fat or “weight”. Because of this fluid loss, lymphatic drainage can result in a temporary loss of girth, but it is not permanent. Over an unspecified period, a reduction in toxins and fluid can cause a loss of lymphatic fluid retention which can be significant.
